I designed these patterns during my last year of graduate school. They represent the temporal culmination of my curiosities and research into surface design, self-curation, and the internalization of cultural norms. Through the symbolism of the Chinese zodiac, masks and mirrors, faces and spines, Mahjong tiles and playing card decks, I sought to explore how icons specific to my experiences as a biracial woman raised in a collectivist family could be extrapolated to a larger context and offer points of relatability through patterns and textiles.
I wanted to explore how my patterns could exist on fabric, so with a little photoshop magic I created a set of napkins and a new ideation on some of my old family photos.
